blind photgraphy - acoustic silence / silent acoustics

Since adequate technical equipment has been developed, numerous attempts have been made to "capture" and "conserve" visual as well as audible phenomena using different methods. The so-called "audiovisual memory" is a result of these experiments - a continuously growing database of images and audio files which, in the long run, is starting to superimpose and replace our "natural" sensual experience of the world.
Two oppositional instruments played a crucial role within this process: the camera on the one hand, which makes it possible to freeze optical (or visual) information by bundling lightwaves through lenses and, within a fraction of seconds, projecting them onto a photosensitive plating. On the other hand the microphone which permanently transmutes (sonic) vibrations in the air into electric vibrations which are supplied to connected recording instruments. However, the way we perceive these recordings is very different. Photography appears to be a spacially clearly limited excerpt of a moment however without any reference to time. Even a long-time exposure (produced, for instance, over the range of several hours) doesn't affect or change our perception. In the contrary, as we can't grasp sound as a spacial phenomena, but these recordings are always temporally limited, we perceive them to be manipulating the space the venue they are broadcasted from.
"blind photography" is an attempt to find out how artistic approaches begin to change with the use of these different media. Which are contextual, which are structural considerations towards different positions within these fields? The exhibition at forumschlosswolkersdorf, organized by FLUSS, NÖ Fotoinitiative shows artists who work with both media, with photography and sound - not by means of multimedia strategies, but rather in parallel concepts. Ö1 Kunstradio dedicates this programme to the acoustic aspect of the issue and broadcasts new pieces by the participating artists for the first time.
